story of srirangam part -05(Kumbadam Renganathar)In English & Tamil

google map of this place ::: it is just opp to srirangam highersecondary school .. a small neem tree is the land mark to enter a small lane to reach this temple...

In the last blog of no.4, i have written about a place called Kumbadam near east of srirangam where there is a renganathar temple which presumably constructed around 1340AD, when Nam perumal was away at Tirupathi.

I took  a print out of this perumal picture and showed to lot of people .. one of my factory worker(obviously a lady,  named Mrs. Kala..) clearly identified this and told me the exact location opp to srirangam boys higher secondery school.. As you can see from the video... the floor is wet with sewage.. the lime martor plasting may not lost long and we may not know the real hand work of the past if we didnot act quickly.....

After a simple look over the temple.. (this place looks  like a tharavi slum, hardly few feet of passage with lot of houses!!) the people in all the houses asked me why i am here and who i am .. thank god my family lives in this place for over 75 years made my stay there acceptable !!!

the temple has granite wall upto a feet height and then old brick masonry ,the lime mortar hand works seems to have been redone many a times.. it is a temple inside a temple... the model renga vimaana to me , may be done in the later period than in 1340"s. may be some one who know the significance of this place would have done this...

The place is not owned by any one.... it is now being used as a dump yard with out knowing its  significance i donot want to alert the people around that place which they may feel threatening their possession...
we need to save a place which i presume would have been of some significance connected to our past....

Kindly send me your suggestions about how to restore this place.... to my email id

  2. Like you rightly pointed out - if we have to do something here, we need the people living there to accept that this is a historical place & they should help in restoring the past glory & this is not going to threaten their living there... becoz in the past we have seen the moment somethings like this is found - "evacuation" is the biggest threat.

You already took the wise track of creatin the engagement. Unless they feel that this is something of great prominence & that restoring or taking care is not a threat to them - we will not garner support.

As you asked in the blog for suggestions ... probably you can ask them the same question - "How can we improve the place ?" I am sure you might get some good suggestions.. The first thing is about cleaning the place - so there starts the funding !... so probably if there is somebody whom we can engage to start the cleaning & probably start the worship services - the place would first become clean. Of course, if the place has to be clean - we need to figure out - where should their dumpyard be... so probably we need to find some 'Garbage bin' as well.

I guess, in the process of you discovering these things, you will find that there are a lot of improvements / betterments that you can bring in.. Therefore, you could consider even formalizing this- by opening a trust - so people who would like to donate can also give you the funds to do.

Of course, the moment you touch funds from various people - the question of fund transperency comes in ..

Then people will start questioning the authenticity of this marvel. So probably it would be good to also in some form engage with the govt body in Srirangam that you are doing this, not as a threat, or complain or trying to make them feel bad - but in the interest of bringing awareness to all - who could potentially help in saving the great past.

Ok .. I guess I have gone too far with my points - but Viji you are doing a fantastic thing. It is easy to give ideas - sitting comfortably at home, you have taken great pains of bringing this. Thankyou is not enough !.

Will contact you by email for the funding.
